Strap on your seat belt. Here are my best résumé rules.

Your Name

Yes, I feel a little silly needing to talk about your name, but I do have a very strong point of view about this topic. I was reworking a résumé and a LinkedIn profile for a man named Stuart Miller. I asked him if I could call him Stu. Then I asked if anyone called him Stuart except his mom. They did not. Then I asked if everyone in the workplace called him Stu. They did. Stuart’s name on his résumé, his LinkedIn profile—and everywhere else on paper, online, or on social media—should be: Stu Miller. Don’t match your résumé and all of your digital real estate and marketing materials with your driver’s license or your birth certificate. These are the first rules of professional branding and marketing. Be consistent. Be personable. Do not be legally formal when you’re building and promoting your personal and professional brand. If you alternate maiden names and married names in your personal and professional lives, then make sure you’re consistent in your professional life. Your job getting hired now is infinitely harder if people have a hard time knowing who you are and how to find you online in any way they want, without a second of confusion.
